Why am I reminded of the Bill Maher spot, A Day Without Jews? We would be so lost without them...

I miss Chicago, where I'm from. Not merely because of such cultural offerings, but because I imagine that Wait Wait performances are something I would be able to sneak into once in a while.

The show hadn't started when I left, but I did go to see y'all at the Moore Theater in Seattle in 2001. Your Not My Job guest was a certain Mr. Dan... er, well, he wasn't wearing a jacket.

Not a chance of getting tickets at Zellerbach Hall unless I had planned a month or more in advance, and I'm simply not that organized!

Jesus - talk about capturing a moment of reality in America. Gotta second cooper's comment.
Also gotta note that this is what I do, and why: "His father always left a radio in the kitchen on... in order to make the house sound like it was occupied...a theft deterrent." And I love this image: "...the thieves outside, dressed in the standard stocking caps and striped shirts, saying to each other, Cheeze it, that’s Nina Totenberg inside there!" Also gotta thank cooper for posting a link to this over on Fanatical Apathy. Thanks, cooper.

Peter, it looks like that writing fellowship certainly has paid off. You are definitely a writer. And a speaker. (So, anyways, is this comment favorable enough to be read on your show? Huh?)

I just had a new millenium driveway moment. I couldn't shut down my laptop and get on with what I'm "supposed" to be doing until I finished reading the transcript of your speech. Does that make it an "easy chair" moment? A "sparkly box" moment?" I'm sure the marketing folks at NPR will figure that one out.

Thank you, Peter

Amazing story and a gifted telling. I remember where I was when the LA riots broke out and then spread here to Las Vegas. And you're right - it was exactly like that and still is.

In fact, I listen to the podcast, so these days I only have dog-walking moments. Great piece, Peter -- that's as accurate and incisive a portrait of LA as PLAY IT AS IT LAYS.

Nicely put, Peter. I actually plan my Saturdays around your show whenever possible so I don't have to have driveway moments :)

"true fact" still drives me nuts, however.

Great story, Peter! Just one question: Who's the half Jew? Is it Scott Simon? I think I heard he's a Quaker.

If I was listening to your story rather than reading it, it would have been a driveway moment for me. Thank you.
