Behind the scenes at “wait wait”

… and if that prospect excites you, man, have you come to the right blog.

In the summer of 2006, producer Jay Shefsky from WTTW in Chicago came to film us preparing for, and then performing a show. I had warned him that our “preparation” is mostly just us staring at computers, but he did a fine job making it interesting. He just now posted the piece to YouTube, so, enjoy. One note: usually, I dress better for the performances. I was in a weirdly casual mood that day.

“Right, exactly, yes.” I never noticed your stock ‘ding’ answer until I watched this video.

Great behind the scenes expose. Like the Simpson’s episode “Behind the Laughter”. Thanks for sharing.

So wishing he happened to have done his piece on the “crapping a Pineapple” episode….

    Hello Peter,

Great piece, thanks so much for sharing it with those of us who can’t see it local in Chicago! I saw you guys a few years ago in San Diego (ahem, excuse me - the *glamorous* El Cajon Performing Arts Center), and it’s nice to see what happens before the live performance.

(going back to lurker status, I’m an expert in that on FanAp…)

Be honest. Usually you only dress the part that’s above podium-level.

In which case we should be thankful he only tugged at his eyebrows for the Willamette Weekly reporter.

That was interesting, but I’d have loved to see more clips of you folks typing at the computer. Strangely, it gives me comfort to know that a good portion of your day is as boring as mine.

    Sigh.

And Adam, I’m not sure we need to know about the below-the-podium dress, or lack thereof. Too bad I can’t get away with that in court, though. “I’d love to approach the bench, your honor, but I’m not wearing pants …” I think that’s a one-way ticket to Cook County Jail.

DvE — It could give new significance to the bailiff’s “All rise” though.

    … ahem… sorry,

Pete, you can dress us up, but ya can’t take us out.

thanks so much for this - i’ve been a huge fan ever since i first heard your show in ‘99 and continue to listen to the podcast (no NPR in southern Germany).
I never realised that you look like you could be Thomas Dolby’s brother…
